After 5:26 it’s done. With an ace, Daniel Altmaier (24, ATP 79) uses his fifth match ball to seal the biggest win of his career to date. In the second round of the French Open, he bowled fellow tournament favorite Jannik Sinner (21, ATP 9) 6:7, 7:6, 1:6, 7:6, 7:5.
A great moment for the German tennis pro. When he steps in front of the microphone for the chair talk, emotions overwhelm him. The audience celebrates him with standing ovations and shouts “Daniel, Daniel”. Altmaier bursts into tears and enjoys the minutes of sustained applause.
“You deserve this applause,” says former tennis player Marion Bartoli (38), when she can finally start the interview. “You showed incredible tennis. How did you win this match?” Altmaier’s response: “I just love tennis. My team and I have invested so much in the last few months. This win is a team effort.”
Altmaier forced the Italian to a five set in Paris for the second time in a Grand Slam tournament. That was already the case at the US Open last year. There Sinner was still victorious. Now it’s the other way around. And Paris again proves to be a good place for Altmaier. In 2020, he defeated the then world No. 8 Matteo Berrettini (27) in three sets in the third round – like Sinner, he is Italian. Altmaier has now won twice in his career against a top 10 player.
“The victory means a lot to me,” Altmaier told Eurosport of his coup. “I just want to show myself on this big stage.” At least he will do that again. His next opponent on Saturday is Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrow (32, ATP 29). (bir)
