FC Winterthur did not live on too much credit at the start of the season. Nevertheless, as a promoted team, it eventually ended up with direct relegation. Because Sion went down in St. Gallen, a bankruptcy against the new champion YB on the last match day was enough.

“We performed the miracle. We left a team. It’s fantastic,” coach Bruno Berner said of the success. His number 10, Mattia Di Giusto, is just as happy: “Even though we lost, it feels great.” After the final whistle there is beer for everyone.

Winti as 1-0 specialist

Winterthur’s relegation shows how much can be done with little. Despite the smallest budget (11 million francs) and the smallest stadium (9,400 seats), FCW managed to score more points than Sion, which has a budget of about 25 million francs.

A look at the statistics also shows that minimalism can also be the key to success. FCW has eight victories in its first season at the highest level in 37 years – six by a narrow 1-0. The last of them at the beginning of May against Wallis, of all places. “That shows our reality as a surprise climber this season. In the beginning we had to learn how to walk in the Super League,” says Berner.

“In terms of results, the start was not good.”

The 6-0 whack against Lucerne on September 10 is one of those moments Winterthur learned a lot from. After this game and the national break of two weeks, we clicked. “In terms of results, the start was not good.” The performance, on the other hand, was okay, Berner sums up. “Halfway through the season we were able to make our development, so that we finally got over the incredible 30 points and we could keep it exciting in the relegation battle until the 36th matchday.”

On the last match day in Wankdorf in Bern, FCW proved once again that they deserve a place in the Super League. “The performance was again very good. It took a shot from YB on Sunday to bring us down.” In fact, top scorer Jean-Pierre Nsame and Kastriot Imeri’s goals belong to the Hammer Goals category.

Will Berner and Di Giusto stay?

Now the Winterthurers face a hot transfer summer. Then the mission degradation starts again. It is unclear with which toppers it will be launched. Above all, Berner and Di Giusto have made a name for themselves in the league. The two do not want to talk about possible transfers after securing their place in the league. That is music of the future. It is now much more important to enjoy the moment.
