First surprise at the French Open: qualifier sends home favorite Medvedev

The first big surprise at the French Open is a fact. The Brazilian qualifier Thiago Seyboth-Wild (23, ATP 172) throws one of the favorites from the tournament with Daniil Medvedev (27, ATP 2). He wins in five sets 7:6 (7:5), 6:7 (6:8), 2:6, 6:3 and 6:4. The Brazilian keeps giving the Russian problems with his game and hardly lets him get into the game at times. In the past six years, Medvedev has only made it past the first round in Paris twice, in 2021 and 2022.

Zverev wins a year after injury

361 days after his serious ankle injury in the same place, Alexander Zverev (26, ATP 27) celebrated a successful comeback at the French Open. The Olympic champion beats South African Lloyd Harris (26, ATP 294) with 7: 6 (8: 6), 7: 6 (7: 0) and 6: 1 and is therefore in round two in Paris. There the German meets the Slovak Alex Molcan (25, ATP 86).

Zverev’s clay-court season has been mixed so far and he has now dropped to 27th in the world rankings. Zverev also suffers more than expected from Harris, who suffered from calf problems from the end of the second set. Under pressure, however, he can rely on his serve.

Ruud and Jabeur also continue with confidence

Last year’s finalist Casper Ruud (24, ATP 4) starts the French Open with a 6:4, 6:3, 6:2 victory over Sweden’s Elias Ymer (27, ATP 155).

Last year’s women’s finalist, Coco Gauff (19, WTA 6), has to beat Spain’s Rebeka Masarova (23, WTA 71) from Basel in three sets, but eventually triumphs 3: 6, 6: 1 and 6: 2. The Tunisian Ons Jabeur (28, WTA 7) is less affected by it. The 2022 Wimbledon finalist easily defeated Italian Lucia Bronzetti (24, WTA 65) 6:4 and 6:1. (nsa/AFP/SDA)
