The thorn is still deep. Borussia Dortmund fell just one goal short of Mainz (2-2) to break Bayern’s dominance after eleven years. There has never been a better chance to take the bowl from the record champions from Munich, but the players lost their nerve at the crucial moment. Was the pressure too great?

The question goes to Sebastian Kehl, who, as sports director, is the first to comment on the analysis: “Of course there was tension between the players. You can’t just shake it off. The nervousness was also greater than in recent weeks. I still had a good feeling that we had prepared the team well for things.”

The first half is a nightmare: two goals conceded within 24 minutes – a missed penalty from Sébastien Haller in between. “Our race plan was quickly thrown overboard,” says Kehl, describing the race to catch up as hectic and wild. “There was only hope for a moment of happiness.” The equalizer came in stoppage time.

Decibel wave acts as a defibrillator

Too late to turn back. After the final whistle, the black and yellow bees lie on the grass like dead bees – hammer instead of honey. Only Gregor Kobel (25) stands up and pats his companions on the back – tears instead of triumph. Moments later, the Swiss goalkeeper has to comfort his girlfriend, who is crying and staring at his shoulder.

Shock for the spectators as well. It’s quiet in the stadium for a few minutes. Until that magical moment when the fans in the south stand support the patients on the field again. “Dortmund will never go down”, sings the yellow-black block. The strong decibel wave acts like a defibrillator. “That was very impressive. That is what sets this club apart,” says Sebastian Kehl – ​​also a legend of the club.

Special treatment of depression

In thirteen years at BVB, the former six became champions three times. Most recently in 2012 under coach Jürgen Klopp. Since then, the fans have also been waiting for the championship to be won. Dealing with frustration is probably harder than ever this year. “There’s a big void and disappointment there,” says Kehl.

But he also finds confidence in dealing with depression. “People here have a very strong feeling for such difficult moments. That will always make this club what it is. That will also help us in the future. But unfortunately I can’t stand the disappointment we’ve experienced from people.”

For the BVB team leader, this also applies to the players. “Now each player has to figure it out for himself. These are the moments everyone takes home. Lived with his wife and family. This takes time. But later they will support each other. He has grown a lot in recent months. We have a lot of energy within the team. We will rise again.”
