Red Cross in crisis: Everything must be on the table

A man has a problem with a slightly younger boss. A boss has a problem with a strong man. Anyone who asks around the Swiss Red Cross is hearing the most ridiculous things right now.

The Swiss Red Cross consists of 24 cantonal associations and other organisations. It is normal for different interests to clash. It is well known that Swiss federalism can be exhausting. Likewise, a director cannot remain a director until he retires. But what is not normal is the nature of the current debate. This includes the pre-Christmas explosion and the skirmishes after. Ironically, the Red Cross, which acts as a mediator in international crises, cannot solve its own internal problems. Why wasn’t there a quick and painless solution that saved the situation for all parties? Ironically, the Red Cross, dedicated to helping the weakest of the weak, spends energy in power struggles.

The current crisis can become an opportunity only if the past is cleared. This also includes the question of what is meant by ‘obvious shortcomings in corporate governance’ and ‘which should be recorded in several independent reports’. Reports are on lockdown, allegations are vague. The longer the conflicts simmering below the surface last, the more losers in the end. Everything should be on the table – now. It is the only way to enable a reliable new beginning.
