You can keep it short: qualifying for the Monaco GP kept what it promised. She remained exciting until the last round. Two-time world champion Max Verstappen (25) snatched former champion Fernando Alonso (41) from the best starting position by 0.084 seconds.

Verstappen: “Alonso can win here!”

“I drive like a beast,” the Spaniard said over the radio to the Aston Martin-Mercedes pits in the second part of qualifying. You could tell Alonso was very excited about his first pole position since Hockenheim in 2012 with the Ferrari.

Fair gesture from Alonso

The 2005 and 2006 world champion honestly congratulated the Dutchman in the cockpit. Verstappen: “Duels with Fernando are always a highlight!”

And Alonso chuckled: “We know that Verstappen doesn’t always manage to make super starts. He can do worse on Sunday!”

Bad weather forecast

In the rain? The weather forecast is bad: so does Leclerc, who initially missed his third Ferrari pole in front of the house by 0.106 seconds and was awarded three penalties in the evening due to a handicap at Norris (McLaren). “We have had nothing but problems all weekend. That’s why I’m not satisfied.

Dangerous outsiders like Ocon and Gasly (both Alpine) and Tsunoda (Alpha Tauri-Honda) were also involved in the qualifying thriller.

Pérez shows nerves

With last year’s winner, Pérez, weak nerves again played the leading role: the Mexican dismantled his Red Bull on the way to the casino after just seven minutes. Last – that’s not how you become world champion!

Alfa-Sauber arrived with high expectations and the biggest update of the year. Zhou achieved the worst result of 2023 in the “new” C43 with 19th place on the grid alongside Pérez (!). And Bottas (15th) only started further back in Melbourne (19th). Of course the fans are disappointed.

Saucy third in Formula 3

Gregoire Saucy (23), from Jurassic, saved the “Swiss Day” in Monaco with a third place in Formula 3, where the great talent from Bassecourt is now second overall, just behind the Italian Bortoleto.

In Formula 2, on the other hand, Ralph Boschung has been completely unhinged since the great start in Bahrain – the Walliser had an accident at the start on Saturday and was only 10th overall.
