The arsonist becomes a firefighter. After Lugano’s match and his tirade against referee Lukas Fähndrich, Heiko Vogel tries to limit the damage. “I want to apologize to everyone. What I did has no place on the field,” says Vogel.
His rebuke to the referee last Sunday ended in this sentence: “I am very concerned about this person’s ability to officiate matches. The arrogance he shows is unbelievable!” Vogel was previously sent off by Fähndrich for inappropriate behavior with yellow and red. He is now suspended for Thursday’s game against Servette.
At the press conference before leaving for Geneva, the FCB coach regrets. “I looked at my behavior and reflected. And I have to say I’m scared for myself. I also have to apologize to my boys. That must not happen again.”
The Swiss Football Association (SFV) hopes that too – they invited Vogel via Blick to referee a match themselves during the summer break – of course with two assistants at his side.
The 47-year-old German declines this offer with a smile. Reason: “I see no need to referee a game now. I don’t ask the referees to play football,” said Vogel.
However, he gladly accepted the invitation for a round table discussion with the association. “The table can also be square,” Vogel jokes further – and adds seriously: “For me it’s about optimisation. We need to improve the interaction between everyone involved. I’m always open to dialogue. And I don’t hold a grudge either .”
This also applies to the media. He humbly endured the abuse of the past few days: “I knew something was going to happen. If you behave like I did, you have to live with criticism. But I don’t put everything on the golden scale.”
