On February 13, voters approved the “Yes to Protect Youth from Tobacco Advertising” initiative.

From 2026, advertising for tobacco products and e-cigarettes will be ready. It will be banned in the future, especially in print media and in public places such as outlets and festivals. Cigarette manufacturers are also no longer allowed to sponsor events to which minors have access. This was decided by the Bundesrat during its meeting on Wednesday.

On the internet only with age verification

According to the Federal Council, online tobacco advertising is only allowed if an age-verification system ensures that minors cannot access pages containing such advertisements. Such age checks will also be introduced in the future for the sale of products via the internet or vending machines. The corresponding amendment to the law will now go to parliament.

In February 2022, the people and the cantons accepted the popular initiative “Children and youth without tobacco advertising”. The new articles of the constitution require that all tobacco advertising reaching children and young people be banned.

Adjustments will be made in 2026

The Bundesrat and the parliament have thus received a mandate from the people to provide for further restrictions. The corresponding amendment to the law will now go to parliament. The adjustments are expected to be implemented in 2026.

Tobacco advertising is now banned on radio and television. It is allowed on billboards and in movie theaters under the Food Act, but certain cantons ban it. The first regulatory tightening is expected to take place in Switzerland in mid-2024, when the tobacco products law passed by parliament in 2021 comes into force.

As of mid-2024, billboard advertising and tobacco advertising will be banned in movie theaters nationwide. The new Tobacco Products Act is expected to be reviewed and tightened from 2026, with proposals now being discussed.

According to the Federal Council, 9,500 people die prematurely every year in Switzerland as a result of tobacco use. It is one of the biggest public health problems.
Tobacco use causes numerous diseases, the cost of their medical treatment amounted to three billion Swiss francs per year. (Okay)
