The husband of Polish cross-country legend Justyna Kowalczyk (40) died in an avalanche accident in the Bernese Oberland on Wednesday. Kacper Tekieli was climbing the Jungfrau when he was caught in the avalanche. The rescuers were alerted the same day, but were unable to rescue him until Thursday due to the bad weather. Tekieli was only 38 years old.
He was an experienced climber and had climbed several eight-thousanders. He and Kowalczyk got married in 2020 and became parents to a boy two years ago. The Pole responded on social media with the words: “He was my one and only.” Her management informed the media that they did not want to make any further announcements about the death at this time.
Jusytna Kowalczyk is one of the greatest cross-country skiers of all time, winning two Olympic gold medals and winning the Tour de Ski four times.
