Two stars despair with a crazy start two hours late

Jon Rahm makes a false start once

World number one Spain Jon Rahm (28) and Englishman Matthew Fitzpatrick (28) face bitter disappointment as co-favourites at the start of the 105th US PGA Championship in Rochester. Both hit rounds of 76 (6 over par) that nearly ruined their chances of winning the second major golf tournament of the year.

The opening round could only start two hours late because the course at the famed Oak Hill Country Club in New York State near the Canadian border was initially frozen. 30 of the 156 will not be able to complete their round until Friday.

The surprising leader at the time of the interruption was the American Eric Cole (35), who only entered the big American circuit this season. Cole was five strokes under par with four holes left to play. His compatriot Bryson DeChambeau (29), winner of the US Open 2020, finished the 1st round as the best player on Thursday with 4 under par. (SDA/SME)
