Before the tournament in Paris (from May 28) has even started, one thing is already clear: record winner Rafael Nadal (36, ATP 14) will not win the French Open for the 15th time this year. The tennis giant from Spain announced at a press conference at his academy in Mallorca that he would take a longer break.
Nadal suffered a hip flexor injury at the Australian Open in January. In Melbourne he was knocked out in the second round as the defending champion and has not fought seriously since.
He himself does not know how long the mandatory break will last. “Maybe two months, maybe a year and a half. Maybe three, maybe four,” said Nadal. And then he unwraps the next hammer: “2024 will probably be my last year as a professional on the tour!”
Since 2005, Nadal, who was repeatedly thrown back by injuries during his career, always participates in the French Open in Paris. The 22-time record champion won the Grand Slam tournament on sand a total of 14 times. Last year he defeated the Norwegian Casper Ruud in the final – his 92nd and so far last tournament victory (in singles) on the tour. (yep)
