Live: Rafa Nadal announces his plans for Roland Garros

The Spanish tennis player clarified whether or not he will participate in the Paris event due to a psoas injury in his left leg

Roland Garros
will not participate

Thank you all for wanting to be here. We invited you for several reasons. The first is that the injury in Australia has not developed as we would have liked. We have been working non-stop with the following goals. The last and most important was Roland Garros, but that became impossible for me. With everything this tournament is for me, you can imagine how hard it is not to be there, but it’s something my body is pushing me to do.”

Since that injury in Australia, Nadal has missed Doha, Dubai, Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Godó or the Mutua Madrid Open. But perhaps his statement warning that he can’t even be in Rome set off all the alarms for Roland Garros, as it was his last chance to compete on clay before the Paris event.

Australia
The last game

The last match Rafa Nadal played was on January 18 in the second round of the Australian Open. The Spaniard faced Mackenzie McDonald and felt discomfort in his hip, which prevented him from showing his best tennis. He was defeated 6-4, 6-4 and 7-5 before declaring at the press conference: «I noticed something in my hip and it’s over. He noticed something the previous days but nothing like today. I have a history of hip problems that have forced me to undergo treatment in the past.”

Rafael Nadal organized a press conference at his academy to announce his decision regarding Roland Garros. The Balearic tennis player, injured in the psoas of his left leg since withdrawing from the Australian Open in the second round on January 18, has not followed through the planned recovery periods, putting his participation in Paris in jeopardy. Several media have already taken it for granted that he will be low in the French tournament, in which Nadal managed to win fourteen times, losing only three games on Philippe Chatrier’s clay.

At 37, Nadal could miss his most dominant tournament for the first time since 2004, when an ankle injury sidelined him.
