Goalie Genoni presents his self-developed skate

Leonardo Genoni likes to perfect his equipment. Eight years ago, the national and champion goalkeeper started developing skates to his liking. “I couldn’t handle the standard shoes anymore, I used too many pairs per season,” explains the 35-year-old.

He builds his own skate from scratch, for which the Zurich resident sat down with experts. A dimensionally stable wooden template was made of his feet. “It took us a long time to get the prototype. There were also two or three failed attempts,” says Genoni. Then he developed it step by step.

Plastic was out of the question for Genoni, as it hinders power transmission. The special thing about his skate: the area between the blade and the skate is made of carbon – and made in one piece. Including a raised protective cap on the toe of the shoe, on which his protector rests, “because I can guide him better that way”.

According to the goalkeeper, who has not yet conceded a goal this World Cup, the properties of his skates are unique. “I need confidence in my gear,” says Genoni, “and I don’t understand why more players don’t get it custom made.”
