Daimler truck boss warns of China’s dependence on batteries

Daimler truck boss Martin Daum has expressed concern over China’s dominance in battery technology. Daum of the German Press Agency said there is an extremely high dependence on China. (archive image)

“Chinese companies already have patents, preliminary products and raw materials,” Daum said. China dominates the world market by 80 percent. “I always think it’s hard when you’re dependent on one country.”

“Although a little later than auto companies, we will definitely establish our own battery production with our partners,” said Daum. But in case of doubt, there are also Chinese patents behind the cooperation. And even if you manufacture the batteries yourself, the preliminary products are still missing.

“We will never be self-sufficient in energy. Germany has always imported the bulk of its energy requirements – why would it suddenly be different, especially when it comes to green energy? Hydrogen can be obtained from many sources,” said Daum. In terms of technology and power generation, you are independent of a single country.

In the second half of this decade, Daimler Truck plans to sell production vehicles with hydrogen-based fuel cell drives.
