Future megastar? 14 NBA teams hope to secure the rights of Frenchman Victor Wembanyama.

Being bad in the NBA – the best basketball league in the world – has its perks. At best, it leads to securing the rights to Victor Wembanyama. The phenomenon from France is considered to be the jackpot of this year’s draw. There’s no doubt that “Wemby,” dubbed “Alien” by megastar LeBron James, will be the first to be signed on June 22.

Wembanyama is 19 years old, comes from Le Chesnay (western suburb of Paris), still plays and swings in his homeland. His father was an athlete and his mother a basketball player. He would be 222 centimeters tall by now, but he is extremely agile and almost able to grab the ring from a standing position. If that isn’t an unbeatable advantage.

A trio with the best odds

What is the happy franchise that Wembanyama ends up with? Decisive is the draft lottery, which will take place tonight in Chicago and will decide which four clubs will receive the first four draft picks. All 14 teams that failed to qualify for the playoffs could theoretically draw the big winning lottery ticket. The best odds (14 percent each) come from the three worst teams in qualifying, the Detroit Pistons (65 losses in 82 games), the San Antonio Spurs and the Houston Rockets (both with 60 losses each). The New Orleans Pelicans have the lowest rate at 0.5 percent.

Nearly all NBA fans and officials look forward to the lottery, especially as more above-average talents await besides Wembanyama. The tension is similar to that of 2003, when Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and a certain LeBron James were among the top 5. The oldest son of “King James”, Bronny (18) is also one of the most hyped young basketball players in the US, but will not be available in the draft until 2024 at the earliest.

In 2003, after winning the lottery, the Cleveland Cavaliers were the first franchise to choose and promptly chose LeBron James. To date, he has won the NBA crown four times, twice with the Miami Heat (along with Wade and Bosh), once with Cleveland and the Los Angeles Lakers. Cleveland lost 65 of 82 games in 2002-2003 and was awarded one of the greatest basketball players of all time. A good omen for Detroit? (yep)
