‘We were too sleuth on the road’

Referee boss Daniel Wermelinger does not think that the Swiss referees have become worse.
Michael WegmanDeputy Head of Football

Dani Wermelinger, have our umpires gotten worse than before?
Dani Wermelinger: No, definitely not. How do you determine this?

Weekend after weekend, the whistles create much more conversation than before.
This is mainly due to technical development. 20 years ago football matches were broadcast with a camera, nowadays that is many times more. There has been almost complete disclosure – which applies to both players and referees.

So are you satisfied with the work of your referees?
Sometimes more sometimes less. If such mistakes happen like in the game between Basel and FCZ, of course not. That irritates us all.

Is the VAR a blessing and a curse for a referee? Is he automatically less focused because he can count on technical assistance?
Our claim is very clear that we are making the right decision in the stadium. I’m sure referees keep their focus even when they know the VAR is there for protection.

The VAR intervenes much more often this year. Is that intentional?
No. At the beginning of the second half of the season, we were often too detective-ish in the video operating room. We have recognized this and made the necessary adjustments, which we will continue to work on.

There are football players and coaches who say that the referees have become more arrogant. What do you think?
It can appear arrogant from the outside if someone doesn’t get involved in discussions. But look: we have a number of young referees who have not been in the Super League that long. It is clear that they are completely focused on their task on the field. Once they are accepted and routine, the way they are treated on the field will be different.
