Argentine coach Marcelo Bielsa is already in Uruguay to sign a contract that will make him the new coach of the Uruguayan national football team until 2026. Sources from the Uruguayan Football Association have confirmed the arrival of the experienced coach who will be officially presented next Wednesday at a press conference.
After signing the contract, Bielsa will get down to business to unveil his first list of foreign players for friendlies against Nicaragua and Cuba on June 14 and 20 respectively.
Arriving in Uruguay, Bielsa will become the second foreigner to lead La Celeste after his compatriot Daniel Alberto Pasarella between 1999 and 2001.
Born in the city of Rosario in July 1955, Bielsa began his coaching career in 1990, ten years after ending his time as a footballer.
From that moment he directed Newell’s Old Boys, Mexican Atlas and América, Vélez Sarsfield, Spanish Espanyol and Athletic Club, French Olympique de Marseille and Lille, as well as English Leeds United.
He was the coach of Argentina from 1998 to 2004 and Chile from 2007 to 2011. With the Albiceleste, he won a gold medal at the Olympic Games in Athens in 2004.
