Reusser takes stage and overall victory

Marlen Reusser celebrates her biggest victory in a stage race. The Bernese solo wins the third and final stage of the Tour of the Basque Country and thus also secures the overall victory.

After 114.8 km with start and finish in Donostia (Sp), Reusser has more than two and a half minutes ahead of first pursuer Demi Vollering, which means she still outsmarts her Dutch SD-Worx teammate in the battle for the tour victory.

“All in all, we were already in first and second place before the last day. But we didn’t just want to defend these positions, we decided to do another offensive race. Our team plan worked out perfectly,” says Reusser.

Their attack from the leading group about 13 km before the finish was agreed with Vollering, the high flyer of this World Tour season. “She was willing to risk her victory. That’s how it happened. I am extremely grateful and very happy because this is my first overall victory in a World Tour.”

Reusser, one of the absolute world leaders in time trial for several years and Olympic, World Cup and European Championship medals to his name, triumphed this year on the World Tour stage in the one-day classic Ghent – Wevelgem solo and also finished third in Liège- Bastogne-Liège. In the Basque Country, the 31-year-old from Bern came second on Friday and third on Saturday. (SDA/mbi)
