The Bernese women in the Women’s Super League do not have the status of the YB men. Still, YB expected more than the songless out in the quarterfinals of the playoffs against St. Gallen. “We had certainly hoped for something more,” says Sandra Betschart (34). The ex-Nati player has been heading the YB women’s department since 2021.

YB was long ahead of the St. Gallen women in the regular season. But in the spring, the team fell out of step, with the two losses in the quarterfinals, YB managed five bankruptcies at the end of the season, lost the home right to St. Gallen for the playoffs and is now out with the overall rating. of 2:7.

Betschart: “We actually play well and always create our chances, but in the last third we simply lacked efficiency for a long time. We need to talk about the books.”

Goalgetter has been missing for the past few months

Notably, YB was unable to make up for the loss of Malaurie Granges (20.6 goals in 12 games) in March with her cruciate ligament tear.

In the two knockout games against St. Gallen, the Bernese also had to realize that the young team with many homegrown talents may lack a leading hand. Caroline Krawczyk is already a team senior at the Out in Espenmoos at the age of 25.

But despite the disappointing end of the season: Betschart emphasizes that no one is panicking about the project to develop YB to the top for women as well. “The road is good. We get a lot of support from the club,” says Betschart.

In the new season, Betschart takes a baby break

Full-time head coach Imke Wübbenhorst (34), who was brought from Germany last summer, remains undisputed.

On the contrary, next season there will be a change elsewhere, at least temporarily – in Betschart’s position. The female boss is expecting her first baby in October and is taking maternity leave. “After that I would like to return.” In what workload and whether the YB women will be managed in job sharing in the future is not yet clear.
