Celebrated hero after win against Lausanne: Yverdon striker Brian Beyer can’t believe it.

When leader Yverdon defeated pursuer Lausanne 1-0 last weekend, everyone involved in this Vaudois derby knew: that was probably Yverdon’s decisive step to the Super League. Goalscorer Brian Beyer (26) is carried on the shoulders of teammates and fans after the game.

The French are in tears. The ascent is not quite certain yet. But Beyer himself has already made his personal ascent. From amateur kicker to winning goalscorer in the hot game for promotion. He says: “There were too many emotions. My friends came especially to support me. You know all the sacrifices I’ve made and the long road I’ve come.”

First professional contract a year and a half ago in Yverdon

Beyer has already contributed 11 goals to Yverdon’s likely Super League return. The clipper has never seen the inside of a football academy. He only signed his first professional contract at the beginning of 2022 – in Yverdon. “That changed my life. I used to have to work part time. I’ve had many different jobs, from scaffolder to courier. I was forced to work and at the same time I wanted to be successful in football at all costs.”

His career begins in the Mulhouse area. In the tenth highest class in France! By comparison, in Switzerland, the 5th division, our deepest league, is the ninth tier. Beyer says: «I played at Burnhaupt-le-Haut but didn’t even qualify for the first team. Then I worked my way up step by step.”

Landed in Swiss football in Bassecourt

His winding path then led him to Switzerland via the Jura first division club FC Bassecourt. Then to Biel, which had just been promoted to the third-rate Promotion League. Then the door actually opens in the Challenge League.

“I couldn’t have wished for a better place than Yverdon to turn pro,” says the late bloomer. “I needed some time to adjust. I had never trained in the morning, only in the evening after work. My destiny brought me here.”

Now Beyer is shooting the team of trainer Marco Schällibaum together with striker partner Koro Koné (twelve goals) towards the Super League. The former amateur kicker even aroused the desires of other clubs. “First of all, I want to finish the work in Yverdon. We’ll see what comes next.”
