The NHL season is over for the Swiss quartet of the New Jersey Devils. Captain Nico Hischier’s team lost Game 5 of the Playoff Quarterfinals to the Carolina Hurricanes 2-3 and the best-of-7 series 1-4.
Emmentaler Akira Schmid conceded the decisive goal in the away defeat in Raleigh, North Carolina, in the 8th minute of extra time. The Hurricanes are outnumbered as Jonas Siegenthaler carried the puck into the stands, earning him a game delay penalty. Schmid, who parries 36 of 39 shots on his target, has no chance. The Swede Jesper Fast deflects the puck from a short distance.
In regular playing time, Timo Meier is involved in the opening goal twice: 1-0 as a passer, 2-1 as a scorer on the power play. The Appenzeller finished the season with a personal best of 42 goals. There are also 28 assists.
The elimination of the Devils should lead to a strengthening of the Swiss team at the World Cup in Latvia and Finland. Schmid, Siegenthaler and Hischier want to join their national teammates – for Meier, who does not yet have a contract for next season, the risk of injury is too great.
It is not yet clear whether the trio will receive permission from the New Jersey Devils. “We cannot even discuss the problem with the team as long as it is not eliminated,” said national coach Lars Weibel.
