As expected, the 5th stage of the Giro ends with the field sprint. The Australian Kaden Groves secured the day victory in the port city of Salerno under nasty circumstances.
Groves won after 171km ahead of Italy’s Jonathan Milan, winner of stage 2. Former world champion Mads Pedersen of Denmark took third place. The section was marked by numerous crashes in the closing stages.
There were also traps in the middle of the stage. 150 kilometers from the finish, a dog ran into the middle of the approaching field and several drivers were hit by this incident. Among them top favorite Remco Evenepoel, who crashed again in the final phase.
The leader’s jersey remains on the shoulders of Norwegian Andreas Leknessund, who took the Maglia Rosa from world champion Evenepoel the day before. However, Evenepoel remains second overall, 28 seconds behind. (sda/str)
