Mainz 05 has to do without their Swiss captain Silvan Widmer (30) in the decisive weeks of the season. The right-back will be “missing for the next few weeks due to a capsular and ligament injury in the left ankle,” the Mainz team said after a medical examination on Monday evening.
Widmer was injured in the 0-3 draw in Wolfsburg on Sunday and was substituted. The club left it unclear whether the 30-year-old international would be able to play again at the end of the season. The injury is treated conservatively.
Mainz is currently still fighting to qualify for the European Cup. The Swiss national team’s next European Championship qualifier is against Romania on June 19 in Lucerne. (SDA/nsa)
