Bouchard with accusations of doping against opponent

Eugenie Bouchard (29) beats Dajana Jastremska (22) in three sets in the first round of the Madrid Open. However, things only get restless long after the tennis rackets are put back in the bags.

The day after the game, the Canadian shared a photo of the game on her Twitter account, writing: “It’s something to play against dopers in Madrid.” Bouchard was referring to the 2017 Madrid Open when she defeated Maria Sharapova. The Russian had returned from a fifteen-month doping suspension. The banned substance mesterolone was found at current opponent Jastremska in November 2020 and she was suspended. But six months later, the ban was lifted because the Ukrainian could prove that she had not deliberately taken the drug.

Apologies a day later

A day after publication, Bouchard deleted her tweet and apologized: “I want to apologize for my tweet yesterday. It was a misjudgment and unnecessary. While I have always advocated fairness, I didn’t have all the facts on the table and wanted to certainly no harm. I will continue to work on myself in the future, both on and off the pitch.”

The first tweet caused confusion among many fans, not only because of Jamstremka’s proven innocence. Since Jastremska had just been struck by fate, her grandfather died on the day of the match. The Ukrainian announced this on her Instagram account.

From a sporting point of view, the Madrid Open was not a success for Bouchard. She failed in the round of 64 at the Italian Martina Trevisan. (byl)
