Glue the zippers

A zipper will only close properly if the teeth meet correctly from the beginning when you close it. In the case of so-called integral caps, this is provided by the so-called end part: a sleeve that brings together two rows of teeth and connects them. If the part is missing or damaged, Bea Haslimeier (60) from Repair-Café Kloten recommends bonding the threads in place with liquid glue. The zipper can no longer be opened as wide as it was originally, this is usually unimportant for interior pockets or the like.

Replacing a zipper is time consuming and expensive. If you cut it before you bring it in for repair, the tailor’s labor is kept to a minimum and this can be reflected in the price. The quickest way to open the seam is to use a dart ripper.

Treat squeaky doors with lubricant

The oil flows fast – handling the hinges with it can make a mess. This is different in oil, which spreads much more slowly into the crevices. An author from the German magazine “Brigitte” recommends using lubricating gel to treat squeaky doors and dry bike chains. Silicone gels are best because they also protect against rust.

Damaged charging cable? Sugru is helping!

Sugru is a minor sensation from the craft industry. After removing the adhesive from its airtight packaging, it takes thirty minutes to shape it into the desired shape, like play dough. It then cures within 24 hours to form a silicone rubber that adheres to almost any surface and is even dishwasher safe. Because the glue insulates electricity, Sugru is great for repairing pesky cracks in smartphone charging cables.

Charge cables “patched” with Sugru also have the advantage of not slipping off smooth surfaces as quickly. Bea Haslimeier of Repair Café in Kloten now uses Sugru for screws that don’t grip. “You fill the clay into the hole and slowly turn the screw. It got stuck after 24 hours.”

Recover rusted tools with black tea

In his nonfiction book How to Repair Everything, British author and patching expert Nick Harper describes methods that can be used to make rusted vehicles work again. For example, by rubbing with multifunctional oil and then rubbing with steel wool. But it also works with black tea! Harper recommends soaking the instruments overnight. The tannic acid in the tea eats up the rust during this time.
