De Nati is in the third week of preparation for the World Cup in Riga (Let). Still with us after the biggest changes in the team: Dario Meyer (26). The striker’s improvement in performance and consistency has earned him a place in the World Cup race. “I never dreamed of that,” he says.
Unbelievable: 13 months ago Meyer played in the Swiss League, twelve months ago he was promoted to the National League with Kloten. “A lot has happened since then, this season hasn’t always been easy,” said the 26-year-old, who was repeatedly thrown back by injuries.
Nevertheless, the striker played himself in the notebook of national coach Patrick Fischer (47). Because at Kloten he could handle the responsibility he was given by coach Jeff Tomlinson (53) and convinced with his creative urge to score. That put Meyer in a roster for the national camp in February, where he continued to impress. “I gained confidence there and then hoped for a chance in preparation for the World Cup.” Here he is now and he wants to fight for the open two or three places up front. “I have nothing to lose.” He sees that as an advantage.
Meyer’s career did not go smoothly for a long time. At the big clubs Bern and Davos, he did not make a lasting breakthrough in the National League. SCB loaned him to Visp and Langenthal, HCD placed him with the Ticino Rockets and sent him to Kloten in 2020.
Being deported in this way was not always easy for Meyer to accept. Looking back, the man from Bern knows that he was not quite up to the Dutch hockey for the first two seasons at his regular club. “Physically I wasn’t ready yet. I’ve only felt good about my body, weight and speed for a year and a half.”
In addition, Meyer has to admit that he is one of those players who can perform at his best when he feels comfortable with a club, in a team and in one place. “Yes, maybe I’m such a sensitive person.” Everything fits in Kloten, “the whole package is here”. And Meyer runs. He still has the best years of his career ahead of him. He then wants to seize this opportunity for the World Cup ticket. “Who knows if and when she’ll be back.”
