College football coach had leg amputated

Fate struck Buddy Teevens (66), head coach of the Ivy League College Dartmouth football team for many years. After being hit by a pickup truck while on a bike ride last month and suffering multiple spinal cord injuries, his right leg was amputated.

The police accident report shows that Teevens and his wife Kirsten were cycling home after a visit to a restaurant when the car collided with the 66-year-old at about 80 km/h. In a statement from Dartmouth College, his wife thanks him for the support after the accident and announces that he is on the mend.

Transfer to rehabilitation clinic

“He is awake and communicating with us. He is now being transferred to a first class rehabilitation clinic for further treatment. Spinal cord injuries are a challenge, but if anyone is up to the challenge, it’s Buddy,” Kirsten Teevens said in the statement.

Buddy Teevens himself played quarterback for Dartmoth College for a long time. As a coach, he spent a total of 23 seasons on the sidelines of the “Big Green” and led the team to five Ivy League titles, most recently in 2021. His previous assistant coach, Sammy McCorkle, will now temporarily assume the position of head coach. (mbi)
