Criticism is, of course, part of it. But everything I heard and read went way too far and was way too populist. Even for a club like Bayern Munich. This discussion about the summer was conducted at an unworthily low level. I wanted more differentiated analyses, a little more calmness and less big headlines.

Do you still see the summer as strong as in Gladbach?
Yann was with Gladbach for eight years and rightfully had a very high reputation in the club. I also think he doesn’t exude the same coolness and certainty at Bayern, but that’s normal somewhere. Yann has not messed up a single game for Bayern, even though he is under a lot of pressure.

How difficult is it for a goalkeeper after Manuel Neuer to be in the Bayern goal?
I don’t know, I’ve never experienced it. But I can imagine it will be very difficult. Neuer is an icon in Germany and in Bavaria. He won ten national titles with the club and twice the Champions League. And in 2014 he became world champion – in Germany that is for life.

Is it possible that German pundits and the media are particularly critical of Sommer because it threatens their Neuer monument?
Maybe. But I don’t know what that should bring. Neuer returns in the summer, this story will happen. He certainly doesn’t need anyone already preparing the grounds for him. These exaggerated reviews of Sommer really do not help anyone.

Do you think Sommer can hide it in the second leg against Man City?
Such sharp criticism does not go unnoticed. Not even Oliver Kahn, as a monster of mentality, would have put up with these things. But Yann will be focused, I’m sure.
