The European transfer market is a two-tiered society: here the mainland clubs, there those from England. As soon as an interested party from the Premier League starts bidding on a player, it only becomes financially interesting for the selling club. Thanks to terrible TV contracts, Premier League clubs are swimming in the cash and paying high prices even for average players.
“When the English come, of course they always get paid more,” says David Degen to Blick. The president of FC Basel dreams of selling one or two players to the island next summer for a double-digit sum – thus filling the club’s tight coffers.
The only problem is that the Amdounis, Dioufs and Ndoyes have to overcome high obstacles on their way to England. England’s departure from the EU (Brexit) means that players from the EU area can no longer simply transfer to the Premier League. Since 1 January 2021, a complicated point system has been used to determine whether a player meets the requirements for a work permit. It takes 15 points to enter the best league in the world.
Players from the top European leagues or national players on the FIFA world rankings more than meet the criteria. However, the Swiss Super League is only classified as a fourth-tier league by the English. Substitutes have to get the necessary 15 points in other ways: with regular appearances in their national teams, participating with their clubs in the European Cup including qualification for the knockout phase or winning national titles.
However, there are loopholes: players who get ten points can hope for an exemption. U21 professionals are most likely to do so. That is probably why Milos Malenovic, the adviser to Basel’s storm jewel Zeki Amdouni, comes to the conclusion that his client can in principle transfer to England in the summer.
YB’s Amdouni and Fabian Rieder are the only Super League professionals likely to be transferred to the island. Assuming, of course, that a Premier League club enters the bidding competition for our biggest jewels.
