The parents of a newborn are allowed to stay away from work for a total of 16 weeks. The mother is entitled to 14 weeks of maternity leave, the papi time is only two weeks.

While the mother gets 87.5 percent of the baby’s vacation days, the father has to settle for 12.5 percent. From the point of view of the Junge Mitte led by Marc Rüdisüli, this is no longer current. The majority of the population sees it the same way. According to a study by the research institute Sotomo, 57 percent of the population is positive about more paid parental leave, quotes project partner Sarah Bütikofer in the press release. According to the interviewees, this expansion should mainly take place in the father’s share. Parental leave will be extended to a minimum of 20 weeks.

Boys, women and Italians are for it

Ideally, according to the study, mothers should even receive 16 weeks’ holiday and fathers 8 weeks’ holiday, which would result in parental leave of 24 weeks. The Sotomo survey showed clear differences between the population groups: young people, women, the higher educated and people from Latin Switzerland are more in favor of introducing parental leave.

However, as Junge Mitte explains, there is no point in demanding parental leave that is far removed from the current status quo. Because experience has shown that such a request is likely to fail. The young party therefore envisions a moderate expansion with four conditions.

The four conditions of the young middle

  1. Parental leave is a minimum of 20 weeks in total.
  2. The fixed part of the mother should not be shorter than the current 14 weeks
    maternity leave.
  3. The fixed share of the father must be at least 20 percent of the total parental leave
    are.
  4. Both parents must be able to take part of the parental leave flexibly.

Junge Mitte Schweiz is convinced that national parental leave with flexible distribution and flexible referral is essential for family and career compatibility for equality between men and women. This has a positive effect on the development of the child and at the same time makes economic sense.

In several cantons, the Junge Mitte or the Mitte Party is now launching appropriate professional initiatives to get national parental leave schemes off the ground.
