In Basel you see things very differently. It is clear to Basel alderman Mustafa Atici (53) that the EM final belongs in St. Jakob Park. “The final belongs in the largest stadium, namely in Basel,” says Atici to Blick. «The decisive criterion should be the available space and not whether it is in the capital or not. Basel has already proven itself for the big competitions at EM 2008,” says Atici.

The schedule is not there yet

When it comes to football, Basel has the greatest international appeal thanks to FCB. Like Graffenried’s YB fan, Atici also has an emotional connection to the stadium in question. The Basel resident also operates catering stands in the Joggeli.

Bern or Basel? Where the most important match of the tournament will ultimately take place remains open for a while. The cooperation between the SFV and UEFA for the EM organization has only just begun, the schedule with the eight locations Basel, Bern, Zurich, Geneva, St. Gallen, Lucerne, Thun and Sion does not yet exist.

EM for women used to often lack capital

Until now, no decision has ever been made about the final location between the capital or the largest stadium in a European Championship for women. Either the largest arena was in the capital after all, or it was not part of the event at all, as in 2017 in the Netherlands (without Amsterdam and The Hague), 2005 in England (without London) or 2001 in Germany (without Berlin).

Bern or Basel. For National Councilor Atici, the answer can only be Joggeli. He adds: “I would also like the spectator seats to be filled with as many women as possible. Women’s football is evolving all over the world. It would be great if we could push him with us with a full Basel stadium.”
