“We have gone beyond our limits”

Remnants of the riots after the cup match between Basel and YB.

About a week has passed since the cup disgrace in Basel, where the chaos of the FCB fans really rattled the security personnel at the stadium. Four people were injured, three of them seriously.

To outsiders, Hatz’s images were a throwback to Basel’s old days. The scenes of the riots after the 2006 FCZ championship title in Joggeli reverberate to this day, now a new inglorious chapter has been added.

The Muttenzer curve, in which the various FCB fan groups are united, does not want to leave the latest scandal uncommented. In a post on their own website, the Ultras take a clear stand – and are extremely self-critical.

“Our reaction has nothing to do with it”

“After the cup semi-final against YB on April 4, 2023, we have massively exceeded our own limits,” was the clear statement from the fans. “The level of violence shocks us.” You have temporarily lost respect for life and the other. “Something that we have always maintained in recent years – even in the face of physical altercations – and that we will do even more in the future.”

In the statement, the Muttenzer curve also explains why the mafia suddenly went so crazy. The trigger was “the rabid arrest of an FCB fan suspected of using fireworks during the choreography”. The fans think the arrest is disproportionate. “But the magnitude of our response has nothing to do with that.”

Bend blocking must be observed

The Ultras therefore draw their lessons from the riots. They want to actively counter the “enemy security forces”. And they want to strengthen “the often inconspicuous, but very proven self-regulation” again.

FC Basel reacted shortly after the riots and announced that they would close the two sectors for the home and guest fans at the next home game in the league (FCB will meet YB again next Sunday). Usually a no-go for ultras. But die-hard FCB fans also repent: “Even though we condemn collective punishment per se and therefore also in this case, we will not avoid them on Sunday, but will come together for a mutual exchange.”
