It’s an important year for Swiss curling. After the fourth World Championship title in a row for the women’s team around Skip Silvana Tirinzoni, the men also won a World Cup medal on Sunday. But Skip Yannick Schwaller (27) says after World Cup bronze: “The disappointment is still there. We have a great team and we have the potential to play for the title.”
But Schwaller also says: “Getting a medal in this area is anything but easy. That’s why we’re happy.” Schwaller also writes family history with his first World Cup medal of his career. The Solothurn is now part of the second generation of Schwallers to win a medal on the world stage.
His father Christof (56) won Olympic bronze in 2002 and silver at the 2001 World Cup. Both times in a team with brother Andreas (53), Yannick’s uncle, who now competes with Benoit Schwarz (27), Sven Michel (35 ) and Pablo Lachat (22) wins his first World Cup medal in Ottawa.
Schwaller Junior says, “It means a lot to me to carry on this family legacy. You both were and are role models for me on and off the ice.”
But the Schwaller curling dynasty isn’t the only Swiss family where World Cup medals are commonplace. When the women won the title in Sweden two weeks ago, it was Yannick Schwaller’s wife, Briar Schwaller-Hürlimann, who climbed onto the World Cup podium in the second generation.
Her father Patrick Hürlimann (59), Olympic champion in Nagano in 1998, has won one silver and two bronze medals at world championships. And Briar’s mother, Janet Hürlimann (61), won World Cup bronze for Canada in 1992 under her last name Omand.
Fathers, mothers, uncles and now with Schwaller and Schwaller-Hürlimann also the younger generation. Two families shape curling in Switzerland.
