Klingberg’s emotional farewell after seven years at EVZ

His start was difficult – his departure emotional. As a new EVZ foreigner, Carl Klingberg needed three weeks in 2016 before he scored his first goal and even longer before he really made an impact. Seven years later after the last appearance for his club, the Swede does something that has hardly been seen by a mercenary: Klingberg goes from the ice to the fan bend and is hugged and comforted by supporters.

Time and time again he pats himself on the back after the zero in the semi-finals. To show that he has Zug in his heart. The 32-year-old can never be faulted for not sacrificing himself for his club colours, for not putting on his bones (and teeth). Until his contracts were renewed, he had to wait three more times until early summer. EVZ’s announcement shortly before the play-offs that Klingberg would have to leave after this season hit the national striker.

He lets emotions run wild

He never made it a secret that he would have loved to stay. Partly because he wears his heart on his sleeve, Klingberg has become the public’s darling, a figure they identify with. The Swede always let his emotions run wild. On the ice he fought back when he didn’t like something. He cried when his old girlfriend left him two years ago. He beamed when he found a new love. He laughed when the ZSC showed the “Swiss Champion” LED banner as a test for the fourth final game in the Hallenstadion. He drew attention to the importance of mental health in this macho sport. And he expressed his frustration when he was fined for a swallow.

His feelings right after the semi-final in Geneva? “I’m so empty,” says the Swede in the best German. Only two or three days from now will he be able to look back on what he has experienced with Zug, including two championship titles. And ahead? Klingberg does not yet know for which club he will open his heart next season.
