“Our music should appeal to as wide an audience as possible,” pop radio responds when asked about their playlists. Accordingly, they sound the same at all stations and not very diverse.
“The public wants it,” wrote German writer Kurt Tucholsky in a poem as early as 1931, in which he lamented the “curse of mediocrity” in the media. And concluded: “Yes, then you do not deserve better.”
But the public wants something else – this is evident in the case of commissioned concerts: suddenly the musical programs become more mixed, and the swarming taste brings out some pearls from the depths of the past.
And if you want to expand your horizons into the future, listen to the American station KCRW, which is rightfully called the “best radio station in the world” – incredibly good music plays here, hits of tomorrow.
Instead, the radio in this country is based on the charts of the most popular songs of today and offers listeners what they already know. Like computer algorithms bombarding me with food ads after finding a restaurant. But now I’m fed up.
Due to the digital storage of music, more and more radio stations are tempted to compose their programs on computers and cut jobs in the music editing department – a fatal development.
Because how does KCRW advertise its hand-picked music program so beautifully: “No algorithms and handpicked by humans because computers don’t like music.” People read because computers don’t like music.
