The public prosecutor in Rome is investigating the Serie A clubs AS Roma and Lazio Roma. Investigations were also launched against the American Salernitana. The clubs are suspected of having falsified the books with fictitious processes related to player transfers.
According to Italian media, the suspects include Lazio president Claudio Lotito and the two Roma owners Dan and Ryan Friedkin. Financial police officers searched the club’s business premises on Wednesday.
The case is about clubs buying and selling players from each other, but assigning them excessive market values and thus placing them more favorably on the balance sheet.
Juventus Turin was deducted 15 points in the current championship for such machinations by the Football Association sports field. Other clubs originally charged, as well as Juve, have so far escaped without punishment. However, the matters are still under investigation. (SDA/mab)
