After 15 years of top sport, it’s over: triathlete Jan van Berkel ends his career at the age of 37. Not immediately, but in the summer after Ironman Switzerland. This will take place in Thun on July 9.

“I don’t want to drive a lap of honor, but stop with a final sprint,” Van Berkel announces. Means: Until then, the Zurich resident wants to give full throttle in training and ultimately fight for victory.

“It has left its mark”

Van Berkel feels physically and mentally in top shape, he emphasizes himself. Then why does he stop? “I spent years thinking about what I need to do to get better every day. And try to act on it. I’ve always liked it, I’ve never regretted it. But at the same time, this process has also left its mark.”

He is looking forward to taking on new challenges outside top sport in the future. “My decision feels super good, at the same time I still have energy for one last challenge.”

2018 home win as highlight

The father-of-two doesn’t want to make a big deal about his resignation – that’s why he decided to inform only selected people and companions before his Instagram post. Van Berkel cites his Ironman victory in Zurich in 2018 as the highlight. “Winning at home was unforgettable. And four days later I got married. More is not possible.”

The question remains: what is Van Berkel most looking forward to when it is really over? “If I stop asking myself if it’s useful to eat a cervelate. That didn’t bother me, but it makes a lot of things less complicated for those around me,” he says with a smile.
