‘Attackers accepted the worst’

At the next home game of FC Basel against YB, the Muttenzerbocht (back) will remain empty.

Three seriously injured, two of whom were able to leave the hospital on Wednesday, are the result of the fan riots after the cup match between Basel and YB.

Bad enough. But the victims were lucky with their misfortune. “The brutality and willingness to use force suggests that the attackers accepted the worst,” FCB communications director Remo Meister told Blick. “We do not know all the details of the injuries, but some of them are head injuries. According to our information, the victims are not in danger of life.”

That’s why YB fans should stay outside

As an immediate measure, the Muttenzer curve and host sector are closed for the next home game – again against the Young Boys. At the start of the crisis meeting, initiated by Basel safety director Stephanie Eymann, a complete closure of St. Jakob Park was also under discussion. The police, who must approve all FCB home games, and FC Basel then agreed to exclude hardcore fans. When asked why the YB fans also have to stay outside on April 16, Meister says: “It was unthinkable for security reasons, among other things, to exclude our own curve, but at the same time allow guest fans.”

Although some people applaud the fans being kicked out, it causes displeasure, especially among Basel’s peaceful match-goers. Because the presale for all other spectator sectors for the YB home game has also stopped immediately. “We are sorry for the partial closure for all those not involved. Everyone can decide for themselves whether this is the best possible measure.”

“Couldn’t just go back to business as usual”

At the same time, people are aware that the sanctions will not solve the root cause of the problem of violence. Why would you do it anyway? “But going back to work as if nothing had happened was out of the question. Such riots in most cases come from the fan turns. It is absolutely necessary that sanctions are imposed there. We had to set a good example,” said Meister, who emphasized that FCB had not acted under pressure from the authorities, but was fully behind the measure.

When asked what they hope from the sanctions at FC Basel, he says: “That those responsible for the riots question themselves. That they come to the conclusion that they have gone far over the border. And that they will fail to do so in the future to support their beloved FCB and see it again in the stadium.”
