Disagreeing with the IOC on the Russia issue: Swiss Olympic President Jürg Stahl.

The Swiss sports umbrella organization Swiss Olympic responds to the recommendation of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in international competitions again in the future.

“In short, Swiss Olympic welcomes the fact that the IOC actively sought dialogue with the various stakeholders in this complex situation and addressed questions and possible scenarios,” the association wrote on Wednesday afternoon. “Swiss Olympic takes note of the decision that has now been made.”

But: «Swiss Olympic maintains its position that Russian and Belarusian athletes should still be excluded from international competitions. The situation has not changed since spring 2022. With the attack on Ukraine, the Russian government opposes the values of the Olympic movement, which is committed to peace, understanding and solidarity between countries and peoples.”

The Swiss umbrella organization had already called for a hard line a year ago and before the then decision to exclude the Russian athletes.

In addition, Swiss Olympic continues to believe that “Russian and Belarusian officials should lose their place in international sports organizations for the time being. The Swiss Olympic Athletes Committee supports this attitude».

The IOC with President Thomas Bach (69) advised on Tuesday to allow Russians and Belarusians to start again. After all, these athletes should not be discriminated against because of their nationality.

If some world federations follow this recommendation, Swiss athletes will also be in trouble: to participate or not? Swiss Olympic says: Swiss sports federations are advised to “enable their athletes to participate in international competitions, even with (Belarusian) Russian participants. This is so as not to hinder their sporting development and not to reduce their chances of qualifying for major events. »

However, those who do not want to participate in international competitions under these conditions should be able to do so without consequences from the Swiss federations.
