The time-honored brisk derby between women’s teams Rangers and Celtic Glasgow can’t be beat for excitement. In a heated closing game, Caitlin Hayes scored an equalizer for Celtic in the 99th minute, and the celebrations knew no bounds.
Joy on one side, anger on the other, as with Rangers assistant coach Craig McPherson. As the players and staff shake hands at the end of the game, Celtics head coach Fran Alonso, who is 52 as of Monday, approaches and headbutts him from behind. Immediately, the two are separated and calmed down.
Afterwards, the Spanish coach can laugh at the action in the Sky interview: “It’s frustration. I wouldn’t show my frustration like that, but it happened and I can understand it. It’s football, those were the emotions.” He felt a light touch and heard McPherson call him “little rat”.
He doesn’t know why the Rangers coach reacted this way: “They didn’t bother me during the game. And frankly, it’s not for me.” He also wishes McPherson not to be blocked or penalized.
Malky Thomson (54), head coach of the Rangers, did not see the scene himself: “If that was really the case, there will be an investigation.” (che)
