The Geneva players rush to goalkeeper Robert Mayer, who shot the puck into the empty goal to make it 5-2.

Richard Tanner had actually already made everything clear with the hit in the empty goal to make it 4:2. But Lugano coach Luca Gianinazzi again replaced Mikko Koskinen with a sixth field player.

The puck landed in the hands of Servette goalkeeper Robert Mayer. And he didn’t hesitate for a second, blasting it across the ice into the deserted goal. 5:2 and the fulfillment of every goalkeeper’s big dream: a goalkeeper goal.

That had not existed in the highest Swiss league for just over 20 years. Back then, on December 17, 2002, ZSC legend Ari Sulander scored a second from time in Ambri to make it 6:4.

“I’m just glad the series is over now”

“I said to Henrik (Tömmernes, the editor), ‘If I get the chance, I’ll shoot,'” Mayer beamed in the MySports interview. “But somehow I still don’t realize it. I’m just glad the series is over now.”

The reaction to Mayer’s goal was not long in coming. Master goalkeeper Leonardo Genoni tweeted: “Rooooooooobert, who else?” Robert Mayer, who else It is not surprising that the 33-year-old has scored a goalie goal. After all, hardly anyone else in Switzerland can play with the stick like he does.

Genoni attached his tweet to a receipt for a 1,000-franc donation to the Sternschnuppe Children’s Aid Foundation. Last summer, the EVZ goalkeeper promised CHF 1,000 for every goalie goal.

Shortly afterwards, Mayer also paid 1,000 francs to the Zurich foundation on his way home to Geneva via Twint.

Bührer inherited Nüssli’s own goal in 2006

In addition to Mayer and Sulander, another goalkeeper is statistically regarded as the NL goalscorer: Marco Bührer. Since there are no own goals in ice hockey, he scored the second goal in the 2006 3-0 win over Basel after days back and forth. His defense was the last puck touched by an SCB player before Thomas Nüssli hit his own net with a failed back pass when a penalty was announced.

From Friday, Mayer, who surprisingly won three times against Gauthier Descloux, and Genoni will face each other in the semifinals. Will the seven-time champion goalie, who has not lost a playoff series since 2018, get the chance to live up to his goalie goal?
