In a joint campaign with main sponsor Telekom, FC Bayern Munich wants to draw attention to hate on the internet. Central is a video with Thomas Müller, Leroy Sané and Leon Goretzka. In it, the Bayern stars read hate comments. The result is frightening.
“I spit on you freaks”, “I wish you all died in an accident, wankers”, “It used to be Mia San Mia, now only foreigners.” Such statements insult Bayern players online in the worst possible way. Certain comments should even be censored. This video is intended to sensitize users to respectful use of the Internet.
“During my professional days in the Bundesliga I experienced what verbal derailments and aggression can do,” said Bayern boss Oliver Kahn. “These hate comments often remain hidden from the public online. We need more transparency here.”
Social media is used by many football players as an advertising platform to promote their own brand or advertise for sponsors. This sometimes earns them a sweet nose. And social media is the stage where the stars can be celebrated by their fans. The hate reactions are the other side of this coin.
