The three craziest podium stories in Formula 1

class=”sc-3778e872-0 gWjAEa”>

Sunday in Jeddah: Fernando Alonso (right) takes the podium in third in the GP.

The American appeared in the small press room shortly afterwards with a laurel wreath and a wooden cup and told Blick: “If they think I’ve won, what am I to do about it?”

Stewart: “Are you crazy?”

Well, everyone was waiting for Emerson Fittipaldi (Bra, Lotus) or Jackie Oliver (GB, Shadow) to be the first to wave goodbye. But because no one had the overview in the Canadian rain and with six different leaders, no one protested. After six hours there was finally an “official” result.

And when Blick came to the drivers hotel after midnight and congratulated Jackie Stewart, who was sitting at the bar, on his fifth place, the Scot said in disbelief: “Are you crazy, I pitted three times.”

And no one knew that night that it would be Stewart’s 99th and final race. Because two weeks later, his Tyrrell teammate François Cevert (Fr) suffered a fatal accident during practice for the US Grand Prix at Watkins Glen. So Jackie stopped a race ahead of schedule.

Cup came eleven days later

Certainly the wrong winner was on the podium in Brazil in 2003: Kimi Raikkonen in a McLaren. The wet disaster was called off after the last of numerous accidents on lap 56. And because Kimi was ahead of Italian Giancarlo Fisichella in the Jordaan after 55 laps, he was celebrated as the winner.

Even then, those in power – as now with Alonso in Saudi Arabia – had problems with the rules. Because if you drop out, the end result will not be the last full lap, but the penultimate! After four days, Fisichella was declared the winner in Paris and received the trophy from Kimi on the track the day before the first practice in Imola!

Verstappen/Vettel penalized

The 2016 podium in Mexico was even crazier. Hamilton won ahead of Rosberg, Verstappen, Vettel and Ricciardo. When Verstappen wanted to get on the podium, he was stopped – a five-second penalty for shortening the course in the final.

That’s how they got Vettel on the podium as third driver. Cheers, hustle. Until the FIA gave the German a ten-second penalty for eventually zigzagging into Ricciardo. And so the Aussie got the trophy for third place sometime after midnight.
