In the third round of the Masters 1000 tournament in Indian Wells, Carlos Alcaraz (19) beats the Dutchman Tallon Fransespoor (26) in straight sets. It is a special victory for Alcaraz: it is his 100th success on the ATP Tour.
And so the Spaniard writes history. He is the second player to reach that goal so quickly. The super talent only needed 132 games for the 100 victories. Only John McEnroe (64) was faster. The American legend needed one less game.
Alcaraz leaves big names such as Novak Djokovic (35), Rafael Nadal (36) and Roger Federer (41) behind. Our Swiss Maestro needed 168 games for the same brand.
Should Alcaraz win the tournament in Indian Wells, he would overtake world No. 1 in the tennis rankings and overtake current leader Novak Djokovic. The Serb is still not allowed to participate in tournaments in the US due to his vaccination status.
And Alcaraz is on course. Because his opponent Jack Draper (21) had to give up after his round of 16 due to an injury in the second set, he is now in the last eight after winning 101. Canadian Félix Auger-Aliassime (22) is waiting there.
The Spaniard already topped the world rankings last September, after winning the US Open he broke the record of being the youngest world No. 1 in tennis history. (byl)
