Swiss hotels are also more full in February

The Swiss hotel industry therefore continues to recover this year. Already in January, there was a 35 percent increase in overnight stays. In addition, the recovery was achieved by the return of foreign guests.

The number of overnight hotel stays booked by foreigners increased by approximately 37 percent compared to February 2022. However, local guests also supported the local hotel industry. They booked 2.6 percent more overnight stays in February than a year ago, according to the BFS estimate.

Despite the strong recovery so far in the current year, it is unlikely that the level of 2019 will be fully reached in 2023. At least not what Swiss Tourism Director Martin Nydegger assumed at Swiss Tourism’s annual media conference at the end of February.

The hotel industry is already very close to the pre-pandemic level. There was only a 3 percent deficit compared to 2019 with 38.2 million overnight stays, a 29 percent increase over the full year.

The rebound among overseas guests will continue to pick up this year, according to Nydegger. First of all, Chinese guests are most likely to return from the second half of the year. Nydegger, on the other hand, assumes that Switzerland will gradually withdraw abroad again.

Therefore, the extraordinarily high number of domestic tourists seen during the pandemic is unlikely to be repeated this year. After last year’s strong recovery, Nydegger also expects a recession among European guests. The inflation environment is curbing the desire of Europeans to travel.
