Basel striker Hugo Novoa (20) had a Sunday afternoon to forget. He only came on in the 72nd minute against St. Gallen (1-1) – and then his working day is over before injury time begins. Coach Heiko Vogel (47) replaces him early. 18 minutes of playing time – the maximum penalty for RB Leipzig’s loan.
“That was not enough for me. If I take one off the bench, I expect 100 percent commitment,” Vogel explained his actions to Blauw after the game. And insists afterwards that the substitution also has something to do with the fact that Novoa wasn’t fair to him. That comes up in the conversation right after the final whistle. “He didn’t tell me he was a bit shaky. He must learn to be honest with me,” warns the FCB coach.
At the same time, he labels the whole thing as a lesson for Novoa. And credits him for wanting to help and play despite the pain of the teams. There are no consequences for Novoa. “He made a lot of good games for us,” says Vogel.
So it’s all sunshine and roses despite the maximum sentence? Not at all. Because at the press conference Vogel sounds different again. There he finds clearer words. “I didn’t like it,” explains Vogel. “I expect impulses from substitutes in the right direction, not in the wrong direction.”
Does Novoa’s poor performance have consequences? No, Vogel sticks to that. “He will get another chance against Bratislava.” The eighth finals of the Conference League will take place on Thursday (6.45 pm). (bir/skr)
