Borussia Dortmund must accept a setback in the Bundesliga championship race. After eight victories, BVB only managed to draw 2-2 against Schalke in the Revierderby. Bayern Munich now leads the table by two points.
For Borussia Dortmund, so successful this calendar year, it is the second setback in a few days – the second without the injured Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. After the clean sheet in the Champions League, the proud winning streak in the Bundesliga ended with the great rival of all men.
Despite a clear predominance and a two-fold lead from Nico Schlotterbeck (38th to 1-0) and Raphaël Guerreiro (60th to 2-1), only one point stands out against Schalke, which was unbeaten like Dortmund in 2023. Marius Bülter, after sending in the strong Michael Frey from Bern, and Kenan Karaman equalized for the team from Gelsenkirchen in the 79th minute.
Bayern Munich came out of the battle unscathed in the afternoon with a 5-3 win over Augsburg, which had defeated the series champion six months ago. It is still one of only two defeats of the season for Munich.
RB Leipzig, now third, also booked a home win, which, however, only turned out in the final phase. When Timo Werner laid the foundations for a 3-0 win over Borussia Mönchengladbach in the 57th minute, the visitors had missed some good scoring opportunities.
Alassane Pléa was particularly unlucky in Gladbach’s ranks: the Frenchman missed a penalty in the 53rd minute and earned that penalty not even 20 minutes later, which Emil Forsberg converted to make it 2-0.
