Great concern for Yakin’s mother Emine

At the end of March, the national team will start the European Championship qualifiers with matches in Serbia against Belarus and in Geneva against Israel. Almost two weeks earlier, national coach Murat Yakin had to deal with difficult days.

As Blick learned, his mother Emine (88) had a health crisis last week and had to go to the hospital. The national coach is always on site these days to be close to her.

He says: “Yes, unfortunately she has had a relapse. My mother suffers from kidney failure, the condition has been acute for about six months. That’s why she couldn’t travel to the World Cup in Qatar, even though she wanted to.”

“A Moment of Fright”

After his mother is hospitalized, Murat Yakin and his family stay with her in the hospital bed. The national coach cancels many appointments in order to support her.

Now, a few days later, he can say, “She’s better. She is stable and no longer in mortal danger. We hope she can go home on Monday.”

It was a “shock moment,” he says. “Now it’s about her accepting the therapy, physically and mentally.” Yakin often accompanies her to dialysis. For blood purification. “I’m with her a lot right now.”

At the same time, Yakin also provides the form of therapy. He speaks of two or three possibilities out there. “It’s not easy at that age. But what’s nice is that our mother is perfectly healthy in her head.”

Always by Yakin’s side

Emine, she has always been the center of Murat Yakin’s family. She herself is a dazzling personality. The football fans around Basel have known her for about 30 years. She stands on the balcony above the Barfüsserplatz when her sons Murat and Hakan celebrate a championship title with FCB. At that time she rode her tricycle to training every day. She is also at the side of Murat Yakin when the latter is a coach at various Super League clubs.

And the daughter of the Turkish officer is the head of a large family: “We were eight children, six from the first marriage, and then me and Hakan.” When Yakin’s father Mustafa is still with Emine, the ten family members live in a three and a half room apartment.

Later, after the parents divorced, Murat Yakin took up something like paternal duties. “It turned out that you can’t choose as a child. My mother was alone with eight children, she did the cleaning and did all the housework. Because she spoke little German, I went through all the administrative procedures and filled in the forms. I looked with her for vacancies in the newspapers and went with her to all the cleaning companies to find a job. And I went to Hakan’s parents’ evenings at school.”

“It gives her security”

The relationship between son and mother is correspondingly close. And it has remained so to this day in these difficult days. “Our mom is happy to see me and it gives her reassurance when I organize,” says Yakin.

What does he do when she has another setback while on the national team? Yakin optimistic: “I hope that will not happen. I will definitely focus on the national team and keep in touch with her through Facetime.”

You are supported at home. “I counted, our family now has 52 members,” says Yakin. “We will all support her together so that she will feel better soon.”
