“Maybe I’ll Stop”

Christian Dubé did not find a solution against Lugano.

Christian Dubé, that defeat to Lugano was another reflection of your team’s season.
Yes, we played well early in the game and were able to keep them at bay as they pushed for the lead. After we were at eye level in the second third, we conceded the first goal. And even though we spent the whole third third in their third, we didn’t score. Just like in the first game of this series. If you only score one goal in two games, how are you going to win?

This problem is not new, is it?
It’s like we don’t have that killer instinct for the opponent’s goal. You have to be prepared to accept pain and possible injury if you want to score a goal that isn’t so pretty. But to be honest, it’s hard to analyze this season so soon after the elimination. We will take time in the coming weeks to analyze and make the right decisions.

How do you explain the lack of attack power?
Look at the talent in this team: we actually have what it takes to be good. But we were less hungry. I’ve been saying that since the beginning of the season. The team was satisfied with the past season and didn’t have a knife between their teeth. In such a tight competition, that is unforgivable. Check out Servette, who missed the playoffs last season — and where they are now. Everyone improved with them. We certainly have a good team, but we are not alone in the league.

How’s your mood?
I am extremely frustrated and very disappointed as I had high expectations. All season I’ve been focused on a step forward in the playoffs. If you compare it to last season, 80 percent of my team underperformed. Some need to look in the mirror. I will too. I will look myself in the eye and see what I need to do better with the staff to get the team back on track so we can have a better season next season.

Do you want to change your staff?
I do not know yet. Maybe I’ll stop. Maybe I’ll change I really don’t know. It’s still too early.

Would quitting really be an option for you?
Honestly, it’s all open. After such a defeat, I am very bitter and very disappointed. I’ve always said I’m not here to waste my time. I spend eight days a week on the ice. At some point you have to deliver results. Last year it was good with the semi-finals. We’ve actually been on the rise for the past four years. It might not be a bad thing to get kicked in the ass every now and then, like this one.

Would it also be an option for you to become a team leader?
I can really think of all the options. I’m speaking from my gut right now and I’m very frustrated. I will take the time to analyze this season and draw conclusions. But like I said, anything is possible.
