European champion! Jason Joseph can be celebrated after his indoor title over 60 m hurdles.

On Sunday evening shortly after 7 pm Swiss time it became official: the most successful Swiss woman at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Istanbul is called … Claudine Müller. The woman from Basel did what no one else could: she won two medals within 10 minutes. And that while she had not even traveled to the metropolis on the Bosphorus.

How it works? Müller is the coach of Jason Joseph (24) and Ditaji Kambundji (20), who both flew medals in the 60 meter hurdles. Joseph won gold for men and Kambundji bronze for women.

Munich’s defeat as an incentive for Joseph

The woman from Basel, who does not like to be the center of attention, is suddenly one of the women of the hour. “Their influence is huge,” says Jason Joseph. “She knows me better than anyone.” The bidder from Basel has been working with her for a long time. She recently became his sole trainer again, having previously trained in the US for two years.

There he worked with Olympic champions and world champions. But what he learned he never really put on track. The most recent disappointment came in Munich last August when he missed out on the European Championship bronze medal by two hundredths. “I really didn’t want to experience something like Munich again,” says Joseph. And so Müller took over again – with resounding success.

Improved the Swiss record six times

“The experience in Munich has brought him a lot,” added Müller. “But you also have to say that he also matured considerably during his time in the US.” This is reflected, among other things, in how concentrated Joseph now works in training. “There’s a time for fun and a time for work,” he says. “When I’m on the train, I want to work.”

Work that pays off this winter: Joseph has broken the Swiss record in the 60 m hurdles within six times. For the last time in his gold run on Sunday night, he won in dominant fashion in 7.41 seconds.

Ditaji Kambundji: “Focused and eager to learn”

Shortly before, Müller’s other protégé succeeded in carrying out the bronze coup d’état. Ditaji Kambundji has only been part of Müller’s hurdle training group for a short time, she is completing technical training in Basel. “She is a very pleasant athlete,” says Müller. «Very concentrated, eager to learn, demanding. And technically she has made good progress.”

In addition, the fun factor increases as the training group gets bigger and stronger. What else could this lead to? “We grow together,” says Joseph. “I take my steps as an athlete, she as a coach.” The outdoor season will show where the next steps will lead: for Kambundji, for Joseph – and for Claudine Müller.
